Embrace your seasons

Embrace the Seasons Within: Yoga and Embodiment for Each Phase of Your Menstrual Cycle

In the ever-changing journey of womanhood, our menstrual cycles hold profound wisdom and power. Yet, many women and thus (their) men are unaware that each phase of the menstrual cycle has unique physical and hormonal backgrounds, requiring distinct care and attention. If a women does not know about what is going on with her body, so how can men? It is time to Gai back that lost wisdom of our monthly bleed. I my upcoming Membership, we celebrate this natural rhythm through yoga and embodiment practices designed for each phase of the cycle. Inspired by Lisa Lister’s insightful analogy of the seasons – Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn – I invite you to honor the unique energies and gifts of your menstrual cycle.

Let us dive a little into the different seasons to deepen the understanding.

Winter: Menstruation

During the menstrual phase, hormone levels (estrogen and progesterone) are at their lowest. This is the time when the uterine lining sheds, resulting in menstruation, or the “bleed.” Many might not realize that this phase, akin to winter, is a time for rest and renewal.

Movement and Self-Care: Embrace gentle, restorative practices. Slow down with yin yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises. This phase is ideal for reflection and introspection. Honor your need for rest and renewal.

Special Power: Intuition and inner wisdom. Use this time for journaling, setting intentions, and connecting deeply with your inner self.

Spring: The Follicular Phase

Post-menstruation, estrogen levels begin to rise, preparing the body for ovulation. Energy levels increase, and creativity blossoms. This phase, much like spring, is a period of renewal and growth, often unnoticed but profoundly impactful.

Movement and Self-Care: Engage in more dynamic and uplifting yoga flows. Vinyasa or Embodiment yoga can support this renewed vitality. It’s a perfect time for trying new activities, setting goals, and embracing creative projects.

Special Power: New beginnings and growth. Harness this energy to plan and initiate new endeavors, both personal and professional.

Summer: The Ovulatory Phase

During the ovulatory phase, estrogen peaks, and luteinizing hormone (LH) surges, triggering ovulation. This phase is characterized by high energy, sociability, and peak physical performance. Like the vibrant energy of summer, this is when we feel most alive and connected.

Movement and Self-Care: Powerful Yoga Flows, high-intensity workouts, and group classes can complement your elevated energy. Focus on connection and community, attending workshops or social events.

Special Power: Magnetism and communication. Use this time to strengthen relationships, network, and share your ideas with the world.

Autumn: The Luteal Phase

After ovulation, progesterone rises, preparing the body for potential pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, hormone levels drop, leading to pre-menstruation symptoms. This phase, reminiscent of autumn, is a time for winding down and preparing for the next cycle.

Movement and Self-Care: As energy begins to wane, transition to slower, more mindful practices. Gentle yoga, Pilates, and walking can help maintain balance. Prioritize self-care rituals, healthy nutrition, and sufficient rest.

Special Power: Completion and release. Focus on finishing projects and letting go of what no longer serves you. Practice gratitude and prepare for the upcoming menstrual phase.

You can see that is so important to be aware of our body’s and minds need at each stage of the cycle, if better, every day! Even more important is that we adapt our practices to support the body and use the superpowers we tap into in each phase.
